Persimmons

Season: October to November

Description: Persimmons provide an excellent source of vitamin A and vitamin C, which are antioxidants that may reduce your risk of heart disease and certain cancers. Vitamin A helps maintain eye health. Vitamin C helps protect skin from bruising, helps heal cuts and keeps gums healthy. Eating foods with vitamin C helps the body absorb iron. Persimmons also provide potassium and fiber. Potassium helps maintain healthy blood pressure and fiber helps control cholesterol and keeps you regular.

Selection: Smooth, round, plump, brightly colored and glossy. Avoid those with soft spots or blemishes.

Storing: Store unripe persimmons at room temperature until they are soft. Once they are ripe, refrigerate for up to 3 days.
